Vices I Admire: A New Bassist. A New Album. A New Era.

Its funny how meaningful a bass player can be to the specific sound of a band. Vices I Admire, and Alternative/Indie Rock band from Colorado, was without a bass player for 6 months before finally landing their new guy; former The Fray bassist Dan Battenhouse (recorded on The Fray sessions entitled The Reason EP). The former Vices I Admire sounded more like early incubus, their original track Monster contains syncopated drums and bass and a rap vocal style during the verse with big, drawn out vocals during the chorus. On the other hand, Vices I Admire 2.0 (the current form of the band) has recorded their first new song entitled Heartbreaker, that sounds much more like Nine Inch Nails meets Pearl Jam. Both versions of the band sound great, staying upbeat, intense and powerful without ever becoming monotonous, but it is interesting none the less to see how much a band can change from one bass player to the next.

Vices I Admire finally finds new bassist

By Dave Herrera in Hearsay, MP3 Freeloader

Tuesday, Mar. 31 2009 @ 4:26PM

After six months of searching, it looks like the guys in Vices I Admire have finally found a new bassist, and you might be as surprised as we were when you find out who it is: Dan Battenhouse (pictured left, bottom right). Name ring a bell? It should. When the Fray was still a five-piece, roughly five years ago or so, back when a bassist was listed as an actual member of the band rather than a hired gun, Battenhouse assumed that position. He parted ways with the outfit before it signed with Epic and recorded How to Save a Life, its major-label debut, and has kept a relatively low profile since. While his playing style was perhaps a little busy for his previous group, it perfectly suits his current one. Battenhouse makes his debut with Vices on Thursday, April 23, at Moe's BBQ, in the company of Yerkish and SoFo. The erstwhile Fort Collins-based band (the act now resides in Denver), is currently in pre-production preparing to record the followup to its debut, Plan B, with JP Manza at Colorado Sound. After the jump, we've posted a demo version of "Heartbreaker," from the new album, the Politics of Apathy, which is due out sometime later this fall.

Mar 18th, 2009 - The Return of the Vice

Yes, yes, yes! The rumors you’ve heard about Vices I Admire are true! What, you haven’t heard the rumors? Well that’s just great, now we’ve got to fire our publicist. Worst use of four thousand dollars we’ve ever spent. I suppose we can give you the big news, right here, right now...

First off, we (Vices I Admire) would like to thank you for your patience. We know it’s been years since we’ve released an album and months since we’ve played live while searching for our new bass player. But the wait is over; Vices I Admire is once again a complete rocking machine hell-bent on making you move! Dan Battenhouse has joined Vices I Admire as their new bass player, and with him comes a return to the stage and new music for you!

The search for our new bassist was long, spanning over six months and twenty auditions. Many bassists could not handle the extreme nature of extremeness that is Vices I Admire and spontaneously combusted while auditioning. But one man, Dan Battenhouse, who has previously played for The Fray, survived the neurotic workings of our human music machine and was asked to join our group. We are now preparing to enter Colorado Sound Studios with JP Manza (engineer) and Ian Pinder (producer) to record our next album, The Politics of Apathy. Until then you can check us out live at Moe’s BBQ (3295 S. Broadway) in Denver on April 23rd and Hodi’s Halfnote (167 N. College Ave.) in Fort Collins on May 15th. Details below.

The Politics of Apathy will be released sometime ‘round September, but in the meantime we’ve got a preview for you! We’ve recorded, “Heartbreaker”, one of the songs that will be included on the record, in our basement studio. You can check out a streaming version of the track right now at http://www.myspace.com/vicesiadmire. Let us know what you think; we would love to hear your input!

Thanks a ton to every single bassist who replied to our ad and was exposed to the awkwardness that is VIA, we really appreciate it.

Come see us live next month and keep a watch out for our new album dropping this summer! We’ll see you in the real world!
